New Jazz Messengers:

Roella Oloro Quartet

In the first of two fundraising concerts for young British musicians seeking to further their studies, we present 21-year-old composer and multi-instrumentalist Roella Oloro.

Inspired by jazz in her early teens after hearing the virtuosic brilliance of Oscar Peterson, Roella moved to London in 2017 to study at Trinity Laban and quickly became involved with London’s vibrant scene, performing with bands such as the Tomorrow’s Warriors Female Frontline, as well as regularly attending jams at Ronnie Scott’s, The Haggerston, Troy Bar and Steamdown.

After spending summer 2018 at Berklee College of Music under the mentorship of renowned drummer Terri Lyne-Carrington, Roella was offered a full scholarship.

After a rigorous fundraising campaign that saw communities come together to help her raise £23,000 in just four months, Roella was able to take up her place at Berklee and has been studying there since September 2019. However, since the pandemic kicked in, she's been forced to study online here.

During her first year at Berklee she formed part of Terri-Lyne Carrington’s Jazz and Gender Justice Institute. Through this and other Berklee classes Roella was able to meet and study with jazz legends such as Melissa Aldana Aaron Parks, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joanne Brackeen and, most recently Wayne Shorter, post-Lockdown via Zoom.

"The journey that I am embarking on is bigger than me and more than just a successful musical career. It’s the long-term fulfilment of my purpose; to meet my listeners where they’re at by enabling the deepest outpouring of my soul through music, to inspire, to elevate, to encourage, to comfort, to advocate for."

Roella is joined by a trio of incredibly talented young musicians to explore repertoire comprising her original material as well as compositions by jazz legends such as Mulgrew Miller, Roy Hargrove and Esperanza Spalding.

Roella Oloro (Piano/Keyboard), Poppy Daniels (Trumpet), Rio Kai (Bass), Andee Liu (Drums).
