"it’s to Mason’s credit that he hasn’t settled for easy options and instead has chosen some demanding material to which the musicians respond commendably."

Geoff Mason Quintet:
Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Grant Green. These were just some of Blue Note’s leading artists in the 50s/60s, cutting
a slew of classic albums for a label whose radical covers influenced generations of graphic artists.
Hard Bop is the music that the Geoff Mason Quintet perform with aplomb - a genre which mixes Bebop with Soul, Blues and Gospel.
Formed in 2002 by the late Roland Lacey and trombonist Geoff, the band has built a considerable reputation as a fine exponent of Blue Note era jazz, and the Quintet continues to follow the original genre and repertoire of the great Hard Bop bands.
Joining Geoff on the frontline is the formidable Simon Spillett - last at the club in 2021 with his impressive Tubby Hayes tribute. Backed by the stellar rhythm section of John Horler, Tim Wells and Trevor Tomkins, expect to hear classics such as Moanin', Xxxxxx, Xxxxxxx, Xxxxxx, Xxxxxxx and Xxxxx....
In addition to fronting his various groups, Geoff has worked with many top jazz stars, including visiting Americans Scott Hamilton, Greg Abate and Daryl Sherman, plus UK musicians Derek Nash, Tina May, Paul Booth, Steve Fishwick, Dave O’Higgins, Henry Lowther and Nigel Price. He also toured the UK with Martha and the Vandellas.
Geoff Mason (Trombone), Simon Spillett (Tenor Saxophone), John Horler (Piano), Tim Wells (Double Bass), Trevor Tomkins (Drums).
". . . an eloquent quartet session from Mason which binds works by jazz masters
Coltrane, Hancock and Monk to a pair of lesser-known originals."
