Alvorada are widely regarded as the UK’s leading performers of choro, a rich and uplifting style of instrumental music from Rio de Janeiro that resulted from a meeting of African rhythms and European harmony, and which also contains parallels with jazz and folk music.
This quintet explore influences from all over Brazil, playing choros with the irresistible swing of samba and maxixe from the South, to baião from the Northeast - all with an immediacy and vibrancy that delights audiences everywhere.
Alvorada’s debut album, First Light, contains original compositions alongside intricate arrangements of choro classics old and modern by composers such as Jacob do Bandolim, Cristovão Bastos, Paulinho da Viola, Pixinguinha, Moacir Santos, Luiz Americano and Chiquinha Gonzaga, revisiting the genre from the perspective of their London home.
After many years playing together in London’s rodas de choro (the traditional, informal gathering of choro musicians), Alvorada was formed in 2016 to bring that sound to the wider UK stage.
Winners of the Latin UK (LUKAS) award for Best Act, and Best Band in the Focus Brasil awards, Alvorada unites top musicians from London and Brazil, whose diverse backgrounds - including jazz, classical and Brazilian music - lend the group a unique and innovative sound.
Andrew Woolf (Clarinets), Rachel Hayter (Flutes), Luiz Morais (7-string Guitar), Jeremy Shaverin (Cavaquinho), Aluá Nascimento (Pandeiro).
