Nu Jazz Warriors:

Karen Shiraishi Quartet

Ever since she fell in love with the Oscar Peterson Trio at age 14, 21-year-old pianist Karen Shiraishi has been hooked on the sound of jazz. Even though she didn’t know much about the music at the time, she knew she had to have a slice of it.

Karen's journey began at World Heart Beat Music Academy and the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy in London. When the renowned Berklee College Of Music offered her a scholarship in 2017, she was, to say the least, ecstatic.

During her time at Berklee, Karen says she's gained so much knowledge and self-assurance. "My playing and composition have improved significantly and I feel like I’m only getting started.

"I've performed at the Berne Jazz Festival in Switzerland as part of NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington’s Jazz and Gender Justice Institute; the DC Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s Jazz Club in New York as part of Ralph Peterson’s GenNext Big Band and Novosibirsk Jazz Festival in Russia with Dean Ron Savage. I’ve also led many of my own recitals.

"I’ve had NEA Jazz Master
Joanne Brackeen as a private tutor, which has been a transformative experience for me. I’ve also attended workshops and clinics with greats such as Benny Golson, Ron Carter, Christian McBride, Esperanza Spalding, Danilo Perez, Linda Oh, Melissa Aldana and Aaron Parks.

"The opportunity to study at Berklee has been a blessing for me. It has opened up so many doors, and has been a dream come true to study music at one of the most accomplished colleges in the world."

This is an opportunity to catch a young musician who's definitely destined for greater things - as are her fellow band members.

Karen Shiraishi (Piano), James Wade-Sired (Trombone), Ezekiel Ajie (Bass), Jas Kayser (Drums).
