Drawing on influences from artists such as Buena Vista Social Club, Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz/Astrid Gilberto, Spyro Gyra and the Gypsy Kings, Picante’s unique compositions incorporate Mambo, Salsa, Samba and Bossa Nova.

Renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones, Picante co-founder Derek Nash is at the forefront of the British jazz movement and is regarded as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the UK today.

A member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and Ronnie Scott's Blues Explosion, he's the MD of jazz fusion octet Sax Appeal, funk/fusion band Protect the Beat and his Acoustic Quartet.

Derek's also performed with Don and Dave Grusin, Bob Dorough, Russell Ferrante and Nelson Rangell, while the other Picante co-founder, Dominic Ashworth, has toured and recorded with Carol Kidd, Michael Garrick and, more recently, Paul Jones.

We're dedicating the evening to the memory of master percussionist Robin Jones who, until his untimely death, was a member of Picante. You can read more about this talented and genuinely all-round nice guy - who performed here in the past - below.

Derek Nash (Saxophones), Dominic Ashworth (Guitar), Neil Angilley (Keyboards), Andy Staples (Bass), Marc Cecil (Drums), Satin Singh (Percussion).

A master percussionist of world renown, Robin Jones had an enviable musical pedigree, not only as the leader of his own groups, but as a busy session musician, working with major artists worldwide.

While in Paris in the 1960s, Robin played with Bud Powell and Johnny Griffin, and performed regularly at the Blue Note with Chet Baker. Among the many other jazz greats he worked with were Ben Webster, Lucky ThompsonSonny Stitt, Red RodneyStan Getz and Al Jarreau.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, Robin accompanied Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow and Art Farmer at the club, and also showcased his groups King Salsa and Robin Jones Latin Jazz Sextet.  A superb musician and genuinely nice guy.
