Deirdre Cartwright's play GROUP
With influences ranging from Pat Metheny and Mike Stern to Horace Silver, play GROUP is Deirdre Cartwright's classic 90s band, which had the honour of representing the UK at the Festival of European Jazz in Mexico City.
Featuring melodic tunes and great grooves, PLAY group perform original jazz fusion and Latin tunes penned by Deirdre from the albums Debut and Play.
Deirdre first hit the headlines in 1983, when she presented BBC TV’s ground-breaking series ‘Rockschool’. She was also a member of one of the most successful British jazz outfits of the 1980s, the internationally acclaimed women's jazz group, the Guest Stars, with whom she recorded three albums and toured in 17 countries.
A hard swinging, melodic and funky guitarist who has learned from a mixture of rock guitar heroes like Carlos Santana and melodically intricate bop guitar stars such as the late Tal Farlow, it is Deirdre's clear enjoyment of the sheer variety of sounds her instrument can be made to produce, that is so infectious and which makes her playing so listenable.
Completing the line-up are sax and flute virtuoso Louise Elliott, Alison Rayner on electric bass and Simon Pearson on drums.
